Rural Films. Jahrbuch für Geschichte des ländlichen Raumes/Rural History Yearbook 21/2024
Herausgeber*innen / Editors: Peter Moser, Brigitte Semanek and Andreas Wigger
The Rural History Yearbook 2024 is dedicated to the topic of ‘Rural Films’. The articles in this thematic volume revolve around collecting, archiving and cataloguing of moving images, as well as their use as historical sources and media of knowledge dissemination. The contributions focus on the medium of film as a source of historiography about the 20th century, with case studies on individual countries or regions as well as overarching analyses based on cooperation in the context of the European Rural History Film Association (ERHFA), among other initiatives. This volume brings together historical analysis, archival and film studies, anthropological and artistic perspectives. What is the particular value of historical film material for analysing and describing the developments of the agricultural sector, economical aspects, infrastructure and social formations in the countryside since the late 19th century? How can parallels and differences in the production contexts and performance practices of commissioned films, home movies or television formats be captured and made fruitful for research on rural areas? Finally, this volume raises questions of how to use film material to communicate historical insights and narratives. What can be addressed and shown in the form of video essays that is not accessible through written texts or oral presentations?
