Agro and Railways: Ruptures, changes and continuities (19th-21th centuries)
The topic discussed in this panel will be the study of ruptures, changes and continuities introduced in the agro and agrarian world because of railways, since the Industrial Revolution to ours days, (19th-21th centuries), from interdisciplinary and varied points of view.
With this panel we aim to take further steps into the research of this relationship by reuniting different visions, perceptions and methodological constructions. Specifically, we aim to find the ruptures caused in the land and in landscapes by railways, from the very first moment of the planning of railway networks and construction to the beginning of the operation that carried the belief in progress as a global collective fever.
We seek to analyse the impact the administrative changes and the big waves of expropriations had in the rural societies of the 19th century and also, looking into the history of present, the expropriations for new constructions and modernisation works, which took place throughout the 20th century.
Additionally, we will examine the impact of railways in the agrarian production in both the mainland territory and its overseas domains, the new forms of agrarian connections and exploitations that arose, and the benefits (if any) brought about by the railway enterprise. Further goals, as the postal service or press distribution and the transformation of rural geographies, as news approaches and methods, documentation and sources, addressing the link between rural history and railway history are welcome in this session.
Our main focus is in the area of Latin Europe (France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, etc.), but this area is not absolutely restrictive.
